Tim Owen (Muzzle loader)

Bore - 20

Muzzle loader

Side lock – T Perrins & Son

Serial number - none

This is a rare – possible unique gun. As we know Thomas Perrins was the older brother of the founder - John Perrins Snr. He was also a gun maker and we were privileged to go to Windsor Castle to see the gun he made for Prince Albert while he had premises in Windsor. What this gun tells us that he also worked – under his own name – in Worcester, probably before moving to Windsor. So once again we have a piece of a jigsaw – we don’t have the rest of the jigsaw, just a few scattered pieces, so we have an inkling of a picture but we must look under all the furniture to try and find a few more pieces. The gun is almost identical to the one in Windsor Castle, without quite such good engraving. The one in Windsor is a 16 bore while this one is a 20.

As you can see Tim is undertaking a complete – and I mean complete - restoration. It will be great to get some photographs when it has been completed to compare the before and after restoration.

Tim was unsure what to do about the engraved name of T. Perrins Worcester as the definition would be lost when re-browned. After some consideration he has decided to leave the original lettering alone and duplicate the engraving further down the rib. Without this it is just another restored muzzle loader – with the name it gives it provenance and a connection to the Royal household.
The gun has London proof marks but apparently this was not unusual even for Birmingham produced guns which were destined for the London trade.

With recent information we can be fairly confident of dating this gun between 1831 and 1833/4

Tim has now sold the gun to
