This gun is a bit of a paradox. It is an early action with Jones underlever lock and early non rebounding hammers, but it has the later button operated fore end rather than a pegged fore end, which one would have expected on a gun this early. It is possible that this might be a pin fire conversion. It doesn’t have the rounded back of a typical centre fire action so this could be a possibility. The new fore end would fit in with this idea as it would have been fitted when the conversion work was carried out. Some one has removed the firing pins, probably to stop anyone firing the gun as it is only black powder proof or possibly to put it on display when there wasn’t quite as much paranoia about such things. It is difficult to read the detail on the rib as I would suspect that someone has lacquered the gun, possibly for when it was on display.
