Percussion Turn Over Pistol

This is a percussion, doubled barrel, turnover pistol which was normally carried for personal protection. The barrels unscrew, with the aid of a key which fits the star grooves in the muzzle. The ball and powder charge were inserted from the breach end and the barrels screwed back on to the action. Percussion caps were placed on the nipples with the lower one protected by a semi circular guard. After firing the top barrel the hammer was raised, the barrels rotated and the gun was ready to fire again. In the age of muzzle loaders this improved ones chances of survival 100% over the single barrelled pistol where it was unlikely that you would have an opportunity to reload if there were two assailants or you missed with the first shot!
